Frugal Thanksgiving Centerpiece

by Myra on November 19, 2009

One of my favorite things to do is decorate — my home, the homes of others and for events. It is my goal to be as frugal as possible when decorating. I like to “design on a dime” without it looking like I did!

I scour thrift stores, yard sales and TJ Maxx for versatile items that I can use to decorate for many different occasions.

Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, I have to share my centerpiece idea with you. The inspiration for this arrangement came from a Publix home mailer — of all places! Ha!

I filled a vase, that I purchased at TJ Maxx for about $10.00 (I’ve already used it multiple times), with a bag of birdseed from Walmart. Then I asked my brother to gather sticks and branches…aren’t brothers amazing?! I used fishing line and straight pins to hang artificial pumpkins (yay for Hobby Lobby half-price sales!) from the branches. To give it a finishing touch I tied scraps of ribbon and sheer fabric around the vase.

For my sister’s baby shower back in October, I hung baby girl hats, socks, shoes and mittens from the branches along with the pumpkins. We were going for a “fall-ish” with girly flair theme. You can see that arrangement here.

Today, I pulled some of my artificial leaves off of my mantel and hung them on the branches. I love it! This arrangement is cheap and dramatic! Just my style!

You could also add feathers, pine cones and/or real leaves. This arrangement could also be made on a much smaller scale. I’m thinking about using the vase and branches for Christmas. I just need to figure out if I want to fill the vase with something other than birdseed. I think it would be so beautiful to hang balls, snowflakes or greenery on the branches. I think a natural, organic look is gorgeous!

And yes, I squeezed the arrangement out the back door to take the pictures on the porch because outdoor lighting is just so much better than inside.

Great idea! Up my alley, too – I can go get most of the stuff outside =) I like Mandy's idea of cranberries or cinnamon sticks for Christmas.

Oh, how creative. Those that can decorate amaze me, and especially those that can it on a dime.
